07/03/2009 - Safe storage for your gardening equipment

The word 'recession' can conjure up all sorts of images and some make reasoned guesses as to how this will impact on businesses such as ours. Surprisingly, it isn't people who have had their home repossessed or companies pulling in their belts that are contacting us most regularly at this moment in time.

Another knock-on effect of the recession seems to be that more people are resorting to crime. Criminal activity is reportedly on the increase and we have been contacted by a number of people who have had their home, garage, shed or outbuildings broken into. Think about it. If you work out exactly how much gear you keep there, you are probably talking about thousands of pounds to replace it, not hundreds. What items does your insurance actually cover in your shed and will you really get the full value paid out if you make a claim? What about peace of mind?

As a consequence of suffering theft or attempted theft, a number of customers are booking smaller units with us, including people who have garden allotments and sheds. (We offer sizes starting from just 3ft x 3ft x 3ft). These bookings are being made ahead of April and May, traditionally the time we welcome vast numbers of overseas students preparing to head home for the summer university recess.

Our message to anyone considering one of our smaller units is that our availability is good as of today, Saturday 7 March 2009, for 9sq ft (£6 per week), 20sq ft (£9 per week), 25sq ft (£10 per week) and 35sq ft (£14 per week). But, we know from past experience that the situation will change drastically in the coming weeks when the smallest units tend to book up first.

Give us a call on 01332 332900 to get some initial information. Better still, if you can spare just a few minutes, visit us at our new facility on Pentagon island and we'll explain about out operation and show you just what you'll get for your money when you book self-storage with us.

The good news is that we may also be able to give you a van to use free of charge to move your items in, or give you a couple of week's free storage if you book our associate company C&F Removals to move your items in for you.

Best regards from Sarah & the team.

10/11/2008 - Capital offer free van hire at new Derby depot

October 2008 saw Capital Self Storage open its doors for business at the new purpose built facility at Pentagon Island, Derby. As predicted, most of the current customers have chosen to transfer from the current site and the process will be on-going for the coming months. The old facility at Uttoxeter New Road is scheduled to close its doors for the last time by Christmas 2008, bringing to an end a ten-year tenure at the former Trent bus depot. Capital has offered its current customers three options with which to transfer items between the two depots.

For many, the easiest and most popular of these is proving to be a managed transfer by associate company C&F Removals. Paul Clarke (Proprietor) and his Team are busily handling moves on an on-going basis, tying the significant work load in with its own business commitments. Whilst some customers have opted to manage the move themselves using their own transport, others are taking advantage of complimentary transport provided by Capital via a local vehicle hire company. This arrangement is proving to be very attractive for a number of customers and is a facility that will now be offered to new customers who enter a storage agreement, subject to a few standard terms and conditions.

As with any vehicle hire agreement, drivers are required to provide their original licence (both parts for the new style license), along with two different additional forms of identification, which should be dated within the last 2 months. They must confirm the hirer's name and address to match that of the driving license. A valid credit or debit card must also be available to act as security for the complimentary rental. Further details are available from Sarah Lyth on 01332332900.

10/09/2008 - Capital Self Storage set for £3.9 m Derby move

New Derby Depot

Work is nearing completion on a £3.9m self storage depot on Derby's West Meadows Industrial Estate.

The yellow-striped Capital Self Storage building, which can be seen  Pentagon Island, is now being fitted out to provide 60,000 sq ft of storage space. Over the next six months, the company will undertake the mammoth task of transferring goods from its base at the former Trent bus depot in Uttoxeter New Road.

Those with belongings or archived documents stored in Uttoxeter New Road have been told of the move.

Managing director Chris Cadman is confident most clients will remain with Capital at its new home in Hansard Road and is looking forward the firm's expansion.

He said: "There was simply no more room to expand in Uttoxeter New Road and, over the last six years, we've completely outgrown the place and this move will push us forward."

The new building has approximately 40% more usable storage space than the former Trent bus depot, split between over 850 different units ranging in size from 25 sq ft to 17,000 sq ft. There will be two four-tonne passenger goods lifts.

The new Capital Self Storage building will offer 24-hour access with each client having their own six-digit entry code for the main entrance. A code will also be required to enter either the ground-floor units or the lifts.

Every door will be alarmed, there will be CCTV surveillance and security patrols.

The reception area will be manned during office hours during the week, from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and from 10 am to 4pm on Sundays.

Mr Cadman said: "Derby differs from our other sites in that 80% of the occupied space is taken up by business users for archive storage."

Having already secured the leasehold of the site, the company bought the freehold at auction in early 2006, when Mr Cadman outbid a number of national self storage firms.

He said: "The site is very high-profile and perfect for us so we were prepared to pay what was necessary to purchase the building."

The site was formerly home to APV Heat Exchangers, a subsidiary of global electronics giant Invensys it but had been unoccupied for the past eight years. The time and temperature gauge that was on the old building will be reinstated as part of the rebuilding project.

The structure was designed by Maber Architects, of Pride Park, and construction work was carried out by Steel Storage, of Twickenham.

Capital Self Storage opened its first site in Derby six years ago after investing £2m to fit out the former Trent bus depot. There is another Capital Self Storage in Blackpool and the company also runs Super Mobile Storage buildings in Preston, Stoke and Hull.

Once the Capital Self Storage building in Uttoxeter New Road is vacated, it will be made available to let.

Development firm Derby City, a sister company to Capital Self Storage, has planning permission to build 108 flats on the site. However, it has no plans to start construction at the moment because of the slump in the housing market.
